The Girl Scouts “Over the Edge” Family Festival is planned from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 1 Garret Mountain Plaza in Woodland Park.

“We are always looking for ways to raise funds but also support the girl scout program and raise awareness about what the girl scouts has to offer,” said Betty Garger, the chief executive officer of the Girl Scouts of Northern NJ.

As of yesterday, 75 people had registered. Each person had to raise $1,000.

They include:

  • NJ State Assemblywoman Holly Schepisi – Westwood - 9:40 a.m.;
  • Debra Bassin – Mahwah – 10:20 a.m.;
  • Lisa Lang – River Vale -12 p.m.;
  • Dena Mercado – Fair Lawn – 9:50 a.m.;
  • Jeannine Perry – Bloomingdale – 12:30 p.m.;
  • Eileen Tiernan – Totowa- 10:30 a.m.;
  • Carmen DaCosta – Wood-Ridge -10:20 a.m.;

“We were looking for something different that was true to the Girl Scout mission of building courage and confidence,” Garger said.

Garger was able to experience rappelling first-hand in June at another Over the Edge event.

“It was a much taller building, 420 feet,” Garger said. “The reason I did it then was to see for myself what it was like, so I could to talk about it first-hand."It was exciting, great fun and I am very proud of myself.”

Girl Scout troops from Bergen and Passaic counties, along with the public, will attend the family-festival portion, during which they can watch the rappelers and enjoy other activities.

The cost $18 and includes a rock climbing wall, an obstacle course, cookie decorating, music and entertainment. Food trucks and face painting will also be on hand for an extra cost.

“All of the money raised supports 30,000 Girl Scouts in the northern New Jersey area,” Garger said. “Of that, 10,000 are from Bergen County alone.”
